Thank you! I didn’t even realize this little digital had such a setting. I found it and tried it… still blurry, though. I think it is the lighting. I always turn the flash setting off. I just can’t stand what the flash does to a photo, but then again at least they would not be blurry!

I am going to try the sports setting tomorrow while the pups are outdoors in better lighting. I’ll bet the combination will fix it perfectly.

Thank you for the post and for making me learn this stupid camera. I was used to real 35mm cameras and have such a difficult time with the change to digital (low end digital) and the lack of manual settings and lenses.

I have a llewellin setter puppy well she’s a year now that my father purchased from grouse ridge kennels in oxford new york shes shaping up to be an excellent hunter and great on birds she went out during the last few weeks of our hunting season when six months old and we were presently suprised by her natural abilities and she pointed 4 birds in half an hour that we shot i clipped a pheasant that she actually tracked and found for us we are now working on force fetching with her. my family has owned setters since long before i was born and have only had 2 llewellins and they were the 2 best dogs when it came to training and ability on birds. this new pup (sadie) is a tri-coulour and is looking great she is the best trained dog we have ever had and watching her work the field is amazing even though thier arent any birds on the training grounds behind my house we make do she can do everything sit stay come whoa fetch quarter we can direct her with a whistle like a lab lie down hold amazing pointing form (twelve o’clock tail foot up) just an outstanding dog and i think its great that you do such thorough backround checks on buyers of your dogs and that you only sell to hunters thats great!! and shows how much you care about the breed. my setter is also registererd in the field dog stud book

Hey Guys,

Piper is doing wonderful. She is all energy and mischief. It’s funny what she thinks she can get away with. She finds her way to the recall pen on every walk, and today jumped up on top and went on point. This one, like my other will be a challenge to focus and reign in, but I love the energy, the birdiness and the boldness. She is a carbon copy of old babe at the same age. No doubt she’ll fulfill her purpose. Very busy now with two birds in training and her. I hope I don’t lose it before fall. We’ll keep you posted. Hope all is well with you guys

I am happy to read your article on dog foods. In fact I came here to your website to look for your thoughts on dog nutrition. I too have struggled with this issue. We have a beautiful little Llewellin setter pup, just under 5 months old. Our breeder had recommended Purina Pro Plan. We absolutely adore our breeder, however our pup just did not look very good to us at 10 weeks. He was thin, although we had food out for him all the time. You could see his ribs and he got cold easily outside if he got the least bit damp. His coat was dry and short and he was getting little red bumps here and there on his belly, chest and muzzle, just a few but something we had not seen before. His ears had to be cleaned every few days. We did a lot of research and found Evo and Wellness, which now we feed as a mixture. The Evo seems a little too rich all by itself. (it can make him a bit gassy) After just a few days our pup looked a lot better and had more energy. Within a couple of weeks his coat was thick and lusterous, he has a bit of sub cutaneous fat now, not too much, but he looks like a pup instead of an adult dog in the middle of hunting season. The skin problems are gone and his ears never need cleaning anymore. He is growing nicely and is getting very strong leg muscles! We also give our pup an occational raw chicken wing or drumstick. He LOVES these and has no trouble chewing up the bones. Many people (including our vet) are horrified to find out we give our pup raw chicken bones, but we have read about how good the raw food can be for dogs, and certainly it is absolutely what canines have eaten for millions of years. We also give our little guy some cottage cheese now and again, as well as plain yogurt and an egg from our own chickens, and some raw or cooked veggies. So our little guy is so healthy now. We are hopeful for a long life with him. He is so precious to us!
Recently we found out our puppy’s father has kidney problems at only 4 years old! We are so worried about him! We know the breeders love this dog (they hand raised him) and will be so very sad if he dies. We cannot help but suspect that the Pro Plan might be part of the problem, but we don’t know how to say anything that might persuade our breeder friends to consider another type of food.
We will hope for the best. Thank you for your information and best of luck with all your beautiful dogs. They are truly gorgeous and your website is spectacular.

Running piper again today on quail. She’s picking it right up. first point held for 5 minutes (like a stone). She let the bird flush before she broke. Another find and point. Working on the stamina. The heat and checkcord are tough on her.
Quite a natural. One of the Maine pups pointed a grouse. Rock solid breeding guys.

Hey guys,

Piper a little lost in the big country for a while. Have been running her with many distractions and falcons overhead. Finally took her out by herself and I was amazed at the transformation. She finally got her nose out of the ground. Pinned her first two wild pheasants. Trailed 4 more to flush. Light is on but like her great grandmom she can’t be removed from the field once on task. looking forward to more action in the next few days. waiting out a blizzard.

Thanks so much for sharing these books. I plan on going to the library first thing in the morning. We pick up our first Llewellin next Saturday and he will be 16 weeks old. He will be our first bird dog and I want to start everything off on the right foot. Is there any one thing that I shouldn’t do when we bring him home? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Hello, your dogs are beautiful! We live in the thumb of MI. I am trying to find where you would be located. I have been wanting to get a llwellin for awhile now. We lost our English Springer Spaniel last year due to health issues. My husband and I both hunt, and miss her. I want a young pup when we get a new dog. We have been hunting weekends on released pheasant in western washington with no luck until today. She got us into 4 birds with one in the hand. The other hunters always ask how old she is and can not believe how well she works for only being 35 pounds. She is fun, fun, to watch work. I will forward photos soon. Ellzie

Loved your post and it’s so true! We actually bought a king sized bed so the dogs would have more room to stretch out and for convenience sake, pulled up the carpet and painted the concrete in a checker board pattern.
Our Llewellyn, Curtis is a year old now and we’re really considering a sister for him and hope to be contacting you all in the spring.

Hello, We are the owners of Aspen, who was Sierra. We really enjoy her company, and she is a wonderful addition to our family which also includes our english setter, Spencer. We have had pointing dogs for only three years, so we readily admit to being rookies in the dog world.

We got Aspen from our trainer Butch Tewell, who told us that he had found us our close in hunting dog. We saw her photos, trusted in Butch, and we added her to our home. She has alway impressed us with how fast she learns, and everyone comments on her good looks and happy fun disposition. Of course, she sleeps in the house, eats in the house, plays with Spencer in the house, but when we let her out she’s the last one in, and you can tell she wants more outdoors.

When we sent her to Butch’s in Montana for training we thought six months old was a little young, but we sure saw a different pup when we went to get her from Butch. She was happy as ever, but we could see she now knew her what her job was.

We saw her point birds, back other dogs on birds and hunt with the rest of the dogs Butch was running. She was a pup still but really having fun hunting with the big dogs.

We live in Washington State, and have started her on released pheasants. She started off a little slow, but by the middle of the season was finding, pointing and holding hens and roosters in the fields and surrounding woods. She is our go-to dog in the thick woods and brush that surrounds our hunting fields here in Washington.

She stays closer that the other dog, and keeps hunting until called to the truck. She does check in regularly, but because she is a small dog, and short to boot, we see her checking in with flying leaps into the air while her head swivels around looking for us. She just loves the hunt, and we love hunting with our “young lady”

P.S. she really is my wife’s dog, but looks to me for a lot of direction when we hunt together. When we seperate, she hunts with Ellzie, and those two always end up with some good storys to tell.

Last week-end, we hunted for quail in Yakima, WA, and we had split up to cover promising new ground. We agreed to meet at a point in the distance, but when I got there, I could not find Ellzie. So, Spencer and I hunted along the river towards where we knew she had to be and found her stuck in some incredibly thick brush, and no idea on how to get out. After viewing the situation from the outside and giving her some good advice, she srtarted out along a way that would lead her out. During this time, her “young lady” stayed with her and did not leave Ellzie until she heard me, and then Aspen came out to greet me.

As you can see, we love our dog, and am really happy to have her. I am sure we will keep in touch and share some more Aspen adventures.

We are the owners of Milan. She is a sweet heart but she is definitely the diva in the house just as she was with her brothers and sisters. Rodger had her out hunting around Cadillac and then in the UP and she got better and better. At first she was kind of clueless but then oh man did she get the hang of it. She even got to go out to South Dakota and hunt pheasant. She did great with all of the birds. Rodger just loves the way that she jumps in the tall grasses like a jack rabbit. She stays close to him and he really loves that about her. We loved this breeding so much that I have a brother from another breeding between Shay and Brier, Chase (Rebel). He has a sweet disposition and I can’t wait until next hunting season it will be his and my first season together. Just love these dogs.

Just cruising through the photos and saw your pix…I have Gibson (Dandy) from the same litter as Timber (Yankee). In fact, if we’d gotten in line ahead of you, Yankee was our first choice from the pictures…congratulations on a great looking dog. By the way, I had Gibson up in Maine the first part of November. Didn’t really take him afield, but ran him around a bit. We did get into some grouse and woodcock with a buddy’s Brittany, and when we brought the birds back home, he got birdy as hell! So I think his nose will be great. I’ll be back there in early fall of 2010. My brother has a place in Wales, ME. Not sure where you are located, but if close, might be fun to get the little guys together next fall. Just a thought…

The puppies are a blast! They are so brave and are having so much fun exploring. They are so full of themselves hiding and pouncing on one another or a passerby’s foot. I even believe a bit of sight pointing is beginning.

When I put them back in the whelping box late last night, they were very unhappy! 🙁 They cried and cried and cried and wanted back out of that box! It must have taken about 30 minutes until they settled down and fell asleep. I felt so bad for them. But, they have to stay in their box at night or when I am not here. And, it’s really the beginning of “crate” training.

Today, they are all doing fairly well with “going” on the newspaper in front of the door. Much too cold for them to start going outside the door, yet. It is 8 degrees outside right now! But, that is a lot of fun the first time they get to go outside and explore. I can’t wait for that!

I’ll bet you are getting so excited. Just a few weeks, now, and you’ll have your pup! Are you ready?

I was one of the excited folks who went to visit the puppies yesterday. All I can say is Wow! It was my first time meeting Scott and Michelle and I can tell you they are really excellent people. For those of you thinking about a pup from this litter I promise you won’t be disappointed with any of them. These puppies are getting more attention than most dogs living in one dog homes. It’s absolutely amazing how these little guys are being cared for and socialized. Visiting these pups hasn’t made my choice any easier that’s for sure. You could put these dogs in a box, close your eyes and pick one and you’d be guaranteed an awesome puppy.

I did learn a few things during this trip. 1). Scott and Michelle love their dogs. 2) Their dogs love them. 3). One look around their home and you know Scott and Michelle are both hunters and you can bet your last dollar their dogs are too. I hope this is useful to anyone thinking about one of these pups.

To Scott and Michelle, thanks for spending so much time with us yesterday and answering all our questions. I can be a real talker when I get going. Your lucky I’m not still there. Lol………. Feel free to share my contact info with anyone if they have any questions about you or your dogs.

Wow, I was watching the puppy cam today and it looked like a stampede of puppies. Addy stopped in to play with them and really got them fired up. 18 is a pile of puppies. Its the most fun I’ve had yet watching the puppy cam.

  Isn’t it a hoot, Chris! They really get wound-up when either of the mommas come down for a visit. They love the big dogs and any visitors. It is a ton of fun. Sorry I did not respond sooner–the puppies had their way with the cord to my keyboard earlier today while I was outside working on the kennels. Needless to say, I could not splice the cord back together (again, actually, as the last batch of puppies did the initial damage). I had to make a trip to the next town to purchase a new (wireless) keyboard! There is just something about that keyboard cord that I can’t hide completely and all puppies love to get their chompers on it!

That is too funny–there is certainly something about power cords they really like. I have every cord hidden, except the keyboard cord. I finally broke down and had to get a wireless keyboard forgoing the wired, back lighting version that I love–at least for a while. I discovered this morning that I have ordered 4 of the wired keyboards in a year!

Your gal, Shawnee, is so smart! She has figured out that she can go behind the recliner, jump up on the air conditioner (that still never made it to storage) and get up onto the sofa. Sooooo smart.

The pups did wonderful on the trip home. They a blast chasing birds during the potty breaks along the way. These little guys just love birds. Once they see the birds thats all they care about. I hope thats a sign of good things to come. 🙂

When we got home they spent an hour running around the yard exploring. We have a pile of leaves and branches I gathered up and still haven’t diposed of and they went to town playing in them.

They did great when we put them in their kennel for the night. Shawnee whined for maybe 2 minutes and after that they went straight to sleep. Not a peep out of them all night. They woke up this morning did their business and ate breakfast. They seem to be adjusting just fine. I’m so glad I bought two. lol……….

Ben sounds very special. I would ask for him myself if we did not already have a house-full. Our little Tess is 24 pounds at 25 weeks… she too may be a “runt”! But clearly she is bold, healthy, and has tons of hunt in her. Small size is an asset in so many ways: takes up less room in the car or on the couch! Certainly the little ones are just as fast, if not faster, in the field. Great things come in small packages! Lucky person, whoever has Ben join their family.

Ben is a hoot–and oh my gosh what a nose he has!!!! He was just going crazy running around with his nose in the air and crying–he smelled my yogurt? They love yogurt. I sat down and picked him up and he went for the yogurt. What a hoot!

His size certainly doesn’t hold him back from doing anything. It sounds like Tess is the same way.

You’re right–great things do come in small packages!

Sounds like your kids are really giving you the business over Mohawk! I’m having a hard time keeping his arrival a secret. The house is somber due to the loss of another pet, but this little guy will be just what the doc ordered.

Can’t wait to see the wife and kids faces! Son said he’d train him for me, seems he took a syc course at school and knows all about animal behavour now….Too funny.

ML, Your too funny…..I thought it was only residents in MA that wined about snow fall and roads…..Like you said, its winter in PA or in my case New England, get over it. I personaly couldn’t handle the alternative (FLA) unless I was on a short vacation. …Flatlands with no character, IE: Mountains, seasons, rural neigborhoods, weather….gad, I don’t no how or why they do it.

Maybe when I’m 89 and want to take up wind surfing I’ll think different but for now, the smell of cut firewood, crannberry bogs, forest do it for me….not to mention the great seafood and picturesque views of Plymouth Haba…(That’s NE talk:)

There is nothing more lovable and sweet, more full of innocent mischief, more adorable or precious, than a young Llewellin puppy. Puppyhood is so very short so every moment is to be cherished! 🙂

Mohawk, now named Magnum is doing awesome, he’s full of energy and as you said, melts in your arms when picked up. He’s a companion to everyone at Townhall where I work and travels with me to explorer fields and cranberry bogs during lunch. The elderly really love him at Council on Aging, therapy for the soul I think they call it.
I tried to send some updates but your email bounced the pictures due to a full mailbox. Let me know when thats fixed and we’ll send updated pics.

Oh my Michelle, if only I’d read your philosophy on puppies in the bed a few months ago, we would have indulged our Tess (and ourselves!) a bit more. When Tess was little, and needed to go out at night, she would come back in then jump up and CLING to whoever was still in bed. We’d let her stay there for a while, but then put her in her crate, thinking we had to work to develop the right habits. She has since outgrown the desire to be under the covers, and she loves her crate, but gosh, we ALL loved the cuddling while it lasted! The other reason we did not let her stay in the bed more is we did not think it would be fair to our other dog who was in his crate, sort of elevating the puppy above the older dog. But now I don’t know, maybe would should have just had 2 dogs in the bed for a couple of weeks! LOL!

There are certainly two sides to bringing a pup to bed with you and I am not the expert to recommend one or the other. We’ve done both and there were many years and quite a few pups that didn’t get to. Maybe I have become softer in my older years. It just seems to make the process of coming to a new home and being away from litter mates and everything they know much less stressful. I personally wouldn’t do it any other way now that I’ve experienced the difference it seems to make in the transitioning. But, it isn’t for everyone and either way they do adapt and eventually settle in just fine–as Tess has!

Being a bit of a Muscle car enthusiast, the sixties produced some great slang and names for the well know cars/parts that were produced. Your probably not old enough to remember and I came a little late to the party myself but there’s no doubt some great names are out there…….Ramrod, Holley, Turbo, Hemi, Hooker etc….You could find many more names online I’m sure……well that’s my two cents worth……..Good luck with the new litter!

I could handle it. Describes the perfect bird dog. No other interests on the planet other than hunting. Prey drive that doesn’t exist in any other dog.
Mine is on a single track. Birds, birds, birds. I’ve never seen one like her and I’ve had a few and seen a few. Been treating her to a few pheasant under the falcons and she just doesn’t miss a beat.
Chased two Canada geese the other day and I swear she thought she could fly up and catch them. She’s flushed ducks in below freezing weather for me swimming after them and does not give up. Got to drag her out of the water.. Wonderful
I hope you do breed her and continue shay and briers breeding thru one or more of their pups. They’re pure gold. I just love the little dogs. 35 lbs of fire.
They are for hardcore hunters…I agree.

I know you could handle that, David! Guess what else? She appears to be developing a bit of a top-knot! Her brother, Boone and sister, Maddie, have them and have since youngsters. At 3 years old, Midge suddenly is sporting a bit of one!

I am thrilled to hear all is going well with Piper and on ducks and under the falcons–wonderful!

We are looking forward to another litter or two out of Shay and Brier. I can’t believe Brier will turn 8 in a few days! Shay is just 6, but time flies by so quickly.

Yesterday Tess chewed up Doug’s work-place phone in the 3 minutes he was in the shower! It still works… sort of… Maybe they should make “phone flavored” treats?!

Michelle I have to laugh Rodger was that way with the color business. But he now says aren’t they so beautiful (Milan and Chase). He also has an orange belton which he thought he always would want a light colored dog. But he now would say that he would take any color as long as they have the desire like your dogs have to hunt. He is so tickled that instead of when he gets the gun out and the dog running and hiding they are jumping up and down excited to go out for a hunt. We love our dogs and I can’t wait until I get to go out and try hunting this fall with my little guy. He is such a good boy!!! Sally

The thing is, it does not matter which pup you get. Once you fall in love with him/her (at first sight no doubt), you can’t imagine how you got so lucky with such a wonderful pup! Each one is the “pick of the litter” to his owners. They are ALL wonderful!

looks like Jenna produced a great looking litter… really wish i would of waited to get one….wish my wife would let me get a 4th dog… Jenna is such a great dog… when me and Graham took her and Count up to my camp for grouse she did so good, even though we didn’t find any birds..(mainly because there was 12 inches of snow). she never stopped… kept that nose going and kept on hunting… even in all that snow… She’s got a hell of a nose and a great drive to hunt …… you raise such good hunting dogs…. i still have photos of that hunt if you want them….

Both our pups were “picked” pretty randomly. Josey became available because the person who originally reserved him changed his mind. We said “we’ll take him!” before we even saw his picture. Tess was chosen “eeny meeny miney moe” out of a small photo of the litter at 5 weeks. I believe you are right that they ALL have terrific potential. Generations of careful breeding assure this to be true.

Santana is out of “Reflections of Tony” (Shoeleather Trace x Shoeleather Diana) and sired by “Shoeleather Bob” (Adam’s Spur x Blizzard’s Chessie). She is a young, snappy, very stylish gal. Wonderful. I suppose I sort-of have been keeping her all to myself for quite a while, but not for too much longer! 😉

Sally, that dog is “Count”. He is full litter brother to Boone, Midge, Maddie, and Blue out of Shay and sired by Luke. Count thinks he is something… and, he is! lol. It may all sound a little too hard to believe, doesn’t it? It’s absolutely true, though! She is such a little pistol and watches my every move. I could tell stories on end about her. When we are away at “camp,” we sometimes get into areas that by using an ATV, allow us to get back in to uncrowded areas, several miles. Midge is always one of the first to go (otherwise she will howl the entire time)… She gets to ride in a crate on the back of the ATV. It’s so funny, though–it’s best to just leave the crate door open or just remove it all-together as she will go bananas if she catches scent of a bird while we are moving. She’ll just go crazy in the crate or jump out and go on point. It’s hilarious. Then, when we go back to the truck to switch dogs or for lunch, she won’t get out of the crate. Nope, she’s not being left behind. Or, if I force the situation and make her get out, she’ll jump up ON TOP of the trailer and sit and wait. She will hunt ALL DAY LONG–or howl in the trailer if you don’t. And she’s no bother, gets along with all the dogs (except she and Dora have some sort of rivalry at times), she is amazing, honors/backs and retrieves… so… she pretty much wins and gets to go every time. She is really something. I adore her–except when I let her ride shotgun on a long trip to keep me company… stop and get out in the middle of the night… and she locks the doors because she is trying to see where I went and hits the button… and I was dumb enough to let the keys in the ignition and the truck running (as long as the truck is running, the dogs in the trailer don’t bark)… Try to explain that one to a police officer in another state in the middle of the night!

Those are wonderful stories about Midge! (and I DO believe they are totally true!) Maybe in your “free time” you could start a blog entry series about each of your dogs, sort of like “picture of the day” but maybe “dog tales of the month” or something! I know I would love to read about each of your dogs. Our Josey being Brier’s nephew, it would be fun to see if they have any similar behaviors. All your clients who have a pup from you, might be interested for the same reason. And who couldn’t love more stories of Midge riding on top of the crate strapped to the ATV!? I know, you’d rather be outside with dogs, than on the computer… but maybe its an idea for a winter project…?

I have always been a Canon fan. My first after jumping on the digital bandwagon was the EOS 10D and I still use it. My main camera now is the EOS30D and I have a sweet little Canon Powershot SX20 (which I believe I may have taken the photo of Cheyenne on the steps with). It takes higher-resolution than the 30D, but I don’t feel it has the level of sharpness I like. It is a very nice camera to take in the field or biking because it is small and light (but not quite as small as a point and shoot little square one). The Powershot looks and feels like a small version of an EOS.

Out now, already is the EOS 50D, telling you how old my 30D is (although I just got it a few months ago! I look for deals on older models and got this one new for a wonderful price) You can even go better with Canon’s Mark line, but they cost more than my first car! lol. They also have the Rebel line which is a very good choice. It all depends on what you are familiar with–some folks are Nikon fans and they have wonder cameras and stick with them because they are familiar with the controls and such and may have compatible lenses, chargers, etc.

You take very nice photos yourself, Sue! So, as for a recommendation, it is difficult as it really depends on if you prefer an EOS so you can change lenses and have a lot of control over your settings, rather you already have lenses that will fit a certain camera (we all know the lenses can cost at least double what the camera body alone costs), etc.

If you are starting fresh, like some control, and changing lenses, I don’t think you could go wrong with either something from the Canon Rebel line or the EOS line (particularly the EOS 50D).

That’s my 2 cents, for what it’s worth!

That is all incredibly helpful! I’ll start internet researching based on what you said, tonight while I’m on “dorm duty” for my job at school. Really, I had no idea where to begin, so your advice is wonderful!

I’m starting from scratch with a camera. The one I have is just a point and shoot, very old, but my first digital. It has about a one second delay between when I press the button and when the picture is actually taken. As a consequence its just luck getting a good shot of anything moving! The thing I really like about it is it has a little viewer screen LCD that swivels around so you can hold the camera down low, at dog and wildlife level, and get a shot from the right angle.

Maybe some day I’ll have some decent pictures to share!

I personaly would select a strong headed female….as was my first choice before I saw Magnum (Male) which I purchased. Tori would be my pick……love the the eye patch color scheme….the bold personality and appears from photo’s has great style. The only detraction is she is named after a Ford Muscle car…..I was a GM fan back in the 60-70’s…LOL…Oooooooh well.

I fell in love with her face in week three & that beautiful orange belton coat will show well in the northern grouse woods with Sable & me. What a beautiful bunch of pups for sure!

I totally recommend either of Temple Grandin's books: “Animals in Translation” or “Animals Make Us Human.” Temple has a special understanding of animals because of her autism. She is now 60 years old and has had a brilliant career teaching as a college professor and working with agribusiness and zoos on animal welfare. She talks some about dogs in her book and although dogs are not her best known species, her insights on all sorts of animals are extremely enlightening.

Michelle, my husband and I send our sincerest condolences for your recent losses of loved ones. Congratulations also on your son's graduation. What a beautiful children you have!

Michelle, Our hearts and thoughts go out to you. No where in this sometimes cold hard world can anyone say its just a dog….having lost many to old age and some to sickness over the years it can the most devastating loss one can endure….even if you know its for the best at times. A dog that is part of your family, hunts as a member of your pack and is the best therapist ever put on the planet deserves old age, a rub behind the ears each nght and some couch time with his favorite family. I’m so sorry Jenna’s time was cut short…but I know you, and i know you gave her the best life any pointer and partner could have. I’ll be sure to toss the ball a few extra times tonight for Magnum when I get home….remembering Jenna.

It has taken me a little while to be able to make this post. The loss of Ron has been felt by so many it was just too painful. But as they say life goes on. I found a quote that finally gave me a little bit of closure with Ron’s death. Unfortunately the author is unknown but the sentiment is EXACTLY what Ron could have said. “If there are no dogs in heaven, then, when I die I want to go where they went.” My buddy loved my dogs as much as I did…maybe even more. He enjoyed their antics and was as proud of their accomplishments as I was. I regret not bringing them to his send off. I miss making the phone calls to report our hunt results. I know Ron looked forward to those calls as much as I did. This fall will be the pits. Dove hunting at Todd’s will never be the same. We will go but it just won’t be the same. Ron, we miss you.

Hi Michelle heard of the recall and have receipts to company. We also spoke on phone with them seem to be concerned and very helpful we are still feeding chicken soup to both dogs Belle and Jessie from another lot. They did get sick though maybe a fluke Jessie threw up and had very loose bowels Belle was very ill took to vet. Hopefully they will pay the 421.00 vet bill LOL. I work at a dog and cat health food store in Sequim WA and have found that you need check your pet food because Diamond is not listing all of the foods that they make at the South Carolina plant on the site. An example is Candae. So PLEASE check your pet food by name, do not just check the diamond pet food web site. Ellzie

Laurie, I hope the girls are okay! This is the first I’ve heard of any dogs becoming sick over it (I had heard only humans), bit who knows? I am glad to hear the folks at Diamond pet foods were kind and concerned—they better be! Keep me updated in the girls.

After reading your posts for the last year or so, I know that you are not the type to complain, so you must be in real agony. As a paramedic for the last 23 years, let me tell you that your call wouldn’t have even made the top 20 of weird things I have seen. Just when I think I have seen it all, somebody is willing to make me think,”well, that’s new!!”
I have been in your shoes, or on your floor, if you want. The only thing that helped me was a chiropractor. I know that you have reservations about them, but, like all other things, you need to find one you can trust. It took me awhile, but I found one that is not aggressive with manipulation, and it made all the difference in the world to me.
I hope that you feel better soon, let us all know that you are doing better. You are living the dream for the rest of us, so we get to live in the Northwoods through your adventures.
Hope that your Llews are keeping you company in your down time.

Hey- Been there done that and I have tried the chiropractor, meds, and physical therapy. Here is my take on it – take the meds both for pain relief and for anti-inflammatory purposes. Take them longer than you think you need them. I like one called etodolac since you only have to take it twice a day. Use cold even though it seems wrong and then after a few days maybe you can switch to heat. Sleep with your knees bent and no pillow. GO TO PT!!! Seriously I think they are magicians and what they do makes much more sense that moving bones around. If you don’t fix the muscles that pulled the bones out of alignment in the 1st place what’s the point – you’ll be addicted to the chiropractor.

Anyway by now I hope you are feeling better and I know you have just lost your best friend so this may not be your worst pain anymore but since I saw this and have done this twice now I thought I’d give my 2 cents.

Nothing as gut wrenching as a missing dog!!! I am glad to hear it had a happy ending. I will be contacting you for my sixth setter in probably 6 months or so. My current dogs are 14 and 9 and I need a new pup. I am hoping to be able to meet you this fall when I am in the UP so I can see your pups. I’m so sorry about Luke. It’s so good to share your story to make them aware of blasto because many vets have never encountered dogs with the infection. Luke’s story could save other dogs. We have 2 year old English springer named Pepe that got blasto this summer. It started with a trip to the emergency vet when he contracted a respitory infection and had. A fever of 105 as well as green snot that turned bloody. He responded to antibiotics and so the vets thought it was a bacterial infection and slight pneumonia. We continued with antibiotics for 2 months because he still had the green discharge and wasn’t his playful self. I continued to research everything and all signs lead to fungal infection. Finally, we took him to UPenn, where he was scoped and there they were, fungal colonies! He has had two treatments thus far and seems to be much better. We are waiting to see if the discharge comes back(hopefully not). Fortunately, we had pet insurance and they covered a portion of his medical bills but his illness has set us back thousands of dollars. Every pet owner should know about blasto in order to prevent the fungus to spread. Although it is uncommon in our area, our pup contacted it.

I’m so sorry for your loss of Luke. My husband’s Llewellin setter hunting dog is 9-1/2 years old here in Pittsburgh PA and we just had her at 3 vets in 4 days. They first thought Lyme, now possibly lung cancer. After reading your article I’m going to make them test for Blastomycosis. I grew up in Ligonier, PA and we now live in Pittsburgh. Korker Ice Jack boots are the best solution I have seen.. They have easily changed interchangeable soles with and without carbide tips embedded. They let you go anywhere and work well. Amazon and others hae them.

Very informative and touching article. We lost our dog 6 weeks ago to Blasto. He was just a little shih tzu, barely 6 years old. It was extremely painful for us. And very strange. I knew nothing of blastomycosis. I live in northern IN. We had a very wet fall however. This was our 5th fall at our house. I fear that the fungus could be in our own yard. But nevertheless, we are moving on, and I pray our new little guy will not get it as well. Sorry for your loss, I know how extremely painful it can be.

Thank you…never forget you Luke. I have 3 white Goldens~Scout 4, Finch 3 1/2, Boo 3. Finch was dx 15 mos ago, lost some vision, he relapsed 3 wks ago and has resumed Sporanox treatment. Boo is now positive for Blasto skin lesion near nail bed. We live in West suburbs of Chicago in heavily wet wooded area. Please be vigilant—this blog is very accurate. If you suspect your dog is sick, force vet to do Mira Vista urine and serum. It is a relatively cheap diagnostic test and chest xray. I also recommend name brand Itraconazole (Sporanox). Price in US is absolutely prohibitive, at $1200/mo…available at Universal Drug Store in Canada at variety of prices depending on where it’s coming from. Your vet will send Rx, they contact you. I am getting it from Turkey for $155/mo. It is exact drug from Janssen Pharma. I learned something too…Boo is an intact 3 year old, breaking my heart. Thanks HUGS.

  Our 1.5 years old Shih-poo was diagnosed with Blasto a month ago and we live in the SW suburb of Chicago. He has been on Sporanox for a month and so far is doing well. However, his left eye can not be saved and probably will have to be removed. We got the Sporanox from Canada Drug. Where in Turkey do you get yours? How many capsules and what dosage for $155/mo? Thanks for your help!

    Sorry to hear about your dog, but it sounds like he is in remission. Continue with his medication until the vet says otherwise. And $155/mo sounds very expensive.
    The dosage is based on weight, and my lab weighed 65 lbs. I was only paying $30/mo. Your breed sounds a lot smaller so I can’t imagine your medication being more than $15/mo tops. You might perhaps think about ditching Sporanox and start using its generic sister-drug, Itraconazole. Maybe this explains the large price discrepancy. Good luck

Why have we not heard of this before? Our family Lab was diagnosed positive with this 2 days ago. I live in NW suburbs of Chicago. One week ago today I noticed that Sable (8 years old) was “out of sorts”. Debated about taking her to the vet, but because it was Saturday and they would be closed for a day and a half.. I took her. she had a temp of 105. ( high fever!), X-rays were taken and she was put on antibiotics for an unknown cause. Only through a phone conversation with my daughter in California, when she mentioned Valley Fever, did I ever think of a fungal infection! Besides the fever, Sable had a very strange cough, and after a few days stopped eating. I thought she got a stick lodged in her throat. The fever persisted and we did the urine test for Blasto on Monday. Results came back positive late Wednesday night. Not being able to afford $1600 / month for the “golden treatment”, I was given the option of going with Fluconazole for treatment. I pray that this works! Now also searching for ways of detecting this & removing from soil in your yard – only seeing articles saying that you can’t do either of these things. Hoping Sable will return to health.

  Sorry to hear about your dog as mine too has wrestled with this horrible disease. Might I offer some advice? Look into generic drugs. In this forum, I’ve seen people posting about Sporanox. Its generic equivalent is called Itraconazole. This cost me $30/mo. for my lab (about 65 lbs). Another alternative is contacting an animal pharmacy in Canada. They will simply have you fax them a prescription written out by your vet and then mail you the medication.
  What you read is correct; you will not remove blasto from your soil unless you maybe blacktop your entire yard. And labs will be labs. They will dig and sniff in all parts of your yard. The only prevention is knowing the symptoms ahead of time so you aren’t caught off guard like so many of us have been with this
  fungus. Good luck

My black lab, Gussy, contracted blasto in 2011, when she was about 15 months old. I share this story in hopes that it will urge other dog owners not to wait on testing and treatment. This disease is like yeast in the sense that it begins slow and goes unnoticed, but then quickly accelerates after you notice the first subtle
symptom.
I live in southern Indiana, which is a hotbed for blasto. In 2011, we experienced
a very wet Spring, which I was later told provided even more perfect conditions
for blasto to thrive in the soil.
It began with a few coughs here and there, nothing that would warrant any type of
panic. I took her to the vet who prescribed antibiotics, thinking it was just a
common K9 ailment. After a couple of days, the coughs became more frequent and I noticed her becoming lethargic. Anyone who has owned a lab knows that at 15 months, they are anything but lethargic. I took her back to the vet and they
had briefly mentioned blasto but said it was really too early to tell and that a
screening, while expensive, might not be very accurate. I opted against the
screening (hindsight is 20/20, I know) at that time and hoped for a recovery in
the coming days.
Within maybe the next day or two, her right eye turned a bright turquoise color.
Unknown to me at that time, that color was the result of her losing vision in
that eye. During that same time, she began limping and I noticed an inflammation
in her left front wrist. I also started seeing small lesions on her legs and
back and her affected eye began to bulge and looked like it might pop out of
her skull. I immediately took her back to the vet who concluded that it was
blasto and referred me to the area specialists at the animal hospital.
That same day, the specialist could immediately tell what was going on. He took
Gussy back and returned about 10 minutes later with a vile of blasto that he
drained from behind her eye. The blasto had begun building up behind her eye,
causing enormous pressure on her brain and eye. The draining served only as temporary relief and he said that we could either try to salvage her eye (i.e. not remove it) through the use of steroidal eye drops and antibiotics, in the hopes of
that taking care of the blasto or we could surgically remove the eye and tackle
the blasto that way. Again, hindsight is 20/20 and I opted to try the eye
drops.
I continued the use of the eye drops for about a week. And again, any lab owners
can imagine the difficulty of holding your lab still as you insert three drops,
four times a day. I noticed we weren’t making any progress with the eye drops.
Her eye cavity eventually began to slowly ooze a green/yellow puss. We ended
right back up at the animal hospital asking about removing the eye. Animal
hospitals are very expensive and fortunately, the specialist told me that my
vet could perform the procedure at half the cost with similar quality.
The surgery was ultimately a success. However at the time, there was no telling how successful it might be and could only tell over the course of the next few
months. Also, the success rate decreases at an extreme rate, the older your
dog.
Gussy had to wear a doggie lampshade for the first ten days following surgery, which was a nightmare. It had to be cleaned daily and put back on her. She had to take daily pills (itraconazole) for about a year to fight off any potential remnants
of the blasto. The dosage of this medication is based on your dog’s weight.
Therefore, so is the price. By 2011, this medication had seen tremendous
advancements, making it less expensive. A decade earlier, it wasn’t uncommon to
pay about ten-fold what I paid in 2011. Gussy was about 65 lbs at the time, and
a monthly supply of this medicine cost me about $30, which she took for just
over a year. Roughly six years earlier, my mother’s terrier had blasto and at
15 lbs, she was paying $8 per day for the dosage.
Recall the inflammation in Gussy’s front left wrist. My vet prescribed her an
anti-inflammatory to take if I noticed any limping, which was still often at
that time. So overall, it cost about $3,000 with the surgery, medication, and
frequent trips to the vet leading up to surgery. Had I acted on the blasto in
the first place, my overall cost would have been probably no more than $1,200. I
hope this story helps other dog owners react more quickly when these symptoms
appear. Just get the screening done to begin with and wait a day for the test
results. It’s well worth it, I promise.
Gussy is four-and-a-half years old now and is still very much active. The
inflammation in her leg is still noticeable, but doesn’t seem to bother her
anymore. Happy trails…

I, too, am sorry to hear of your loss. Brier was a beauty. I also lost my beautiful SadieMae (sired by Brier, out of Annie, owned by Rick Sager of Somerset) in October two weeks before PA bird season. My heart is still aching. I would love to get another Lew out of Brier’s line but am not quite ready to move on Levi and Maddie’s litter. I wish I could post a pic of Sadie here so you could see what a magnificent dog she was.
